A day at the races is always good fun especially when it’s at the Circuit des Remparts a historic race circuit in Angoulême, France using the same ancient road layout since it began in 1939.

Racing restarted on June 13-15th 1947 following the Second World War. Now held every September the Circuit des Remparts is known as one of the ‘must go places’ if you love classic and historic cars.

I do love a flyer and this one certainly caught my eye! The 2018 season flyer was designed by Belgian artist, Jean-Marc Delvaux. I must say that some (actually most) of the French websites are shockingly awful (sorry) but they do love their flyers (yay), which is great, as a fellow flyer nerd. In fact, I am loving these flyers so much, it has to lead me onto a browsing session to look at the history of them (another post on its way).
Angouleme is a stunning town and just the perfect venue to host this historic event. On the way to my meeting point at the Hotel De Ville (wow what a place). Vintage cars of all sizes and ages lined the streets around the main event. It was impressive how the town becomes a full-on race track in a matter of days.
After getting our wrist bands, we queued to access the Paddocks and Race Track. We met a very nice security guard who confiscated my monopod. Why I asked because it did not have three legs! I said I needed it for my bad foot (well you have to try), but that didn’t work either 🙂
Before heading over the race track we had a wander around the paddocks. This was the area ready for the racing with all the cars labelled and lined up ready for their race.
In Memory: Denis Derex
Whilst we were wandering around looking for key areas to stand for photos, the last practice race was still going on. Sadly there was a terrible accident when Denis Derex’s Morris Cooper S violently hit the barrier at the Fangio bend. He was taken to hospital but we sadly learnt later during the day that he has passed away.
After an interval, the racing started and we watched a couple.
Not long after I took this image, Anna Tiger entered the Raymond Sommer stage (devoted to cars older than 1939 of less than 1500 cm3) in her 1928 Ratier and had an accident on one of the bends. She was conscious and taken to the local hospital with fractures. Hope she recovers soon and is back next year. I was great to see ladies racing.
